PC ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP - 4th September 2015

(IND 2014-127)
The PC Assembly workshop was organised with the intention that the students should have the basic knowledge of the computer peripherals they use in the daily life. So we, the students of the Google Student Club and The IEEE Computer Society conducted this particular workshop which helped students to learn dismantle and assemble the CPU in a very less time in an efficient way.
Overall Objective of the event:
The overall objective of this workshop was to teach the students of the Sathyabama University to know about the computers we use in the daily life. The theme was to enlighten the students about the basic components of the CPU of a computer by giving a brief explanation about them. The students were explained the use of all the parts and then they were asked some basic questions about what they have learnt. Then they were shown the process to dismantle the CPU and reassemble them by our Instructors of the day - Paras, Manish Srivatsav and Gaurav Mishra.
After the students were shown the process, they were grouped as teams of 2 by our instructors and given a target time of 4 minutes to assemble all the parts in a definite order and in a proper way. The top 3 teams were selected and given certificates for their work.
Highlights of success:
The students were very much interested because many of them knew how to fit in the basic components in the CPU but didn't actually know to remove and assemble all the parts completely and know their specific use. This made them enthusiastic to observe and the main goal of the event was thus achieved.
Feedback from the Attendees:
The feedback from the students was quite well, more than expected. As the students seemed highly interested in the workshop to learn the new stuff. They liked the challenge put in front of them to assemble the PC in a less time of 4 minutes, as it was quite different from the regular workshops that are conducted usually.
Logistics/Planning:
Every part of the event was planned well before and the venue was the Student Activity Center in out University. There was ample space for the students to form a group and observe the assembly being explained by the instructors. The event started at 1:00 PM and continued till 3:45 PM. We were provided with 7 CPU's by our University Management out of which 3 were used for the challenge round by the students.
Key Learning:
The students get to know about the working and the importance of the components. We taught them the things which are usually not taught until a certain time from now. Knowing these things beforehand will help them to understand the topics much clearly when they are brought up in the curriculum of their course.
Follow-Up Actions:
After this particular event, we got to observe and find some enthusiastic minds who are good and fast enough to grasp new things in a very short time and implement them. They would be helpful to us in the forthcoming events whom we would like to teach much more new concepts and get ideas from them. Nevertheless, as the participants were quite excited about the time-based activity, we would like to hold more events in such manner in order to maintain their curiosity to participate in more technical event such as this one!
