SATHYABAMA UNIVERSITY

PC ASSEMBLY WORKSHOP - 4th September 2015

Compiled by - Prashant Kumar Pandey
(IND 2014-127)

Summary:

The PC Assembly workshop was organised with the intention that the students should have the basic knowledge of the computer peripherals they use in the daily life. So we, the students of the Google Student Club and The IEEE Computer Society conducted this particular workshop which helped students to learn dismantle and assemble the CPU in a very less time in an efficient way.

Overall Objective of the event:

The overall objective of this workshop was to teach the students of the Sathyabama University to know about the computers we use in the daily life. The theme was to enlighten the students about the basic components of the CPU of a computer by giving a brief explanation about them. The students were explained the use of all the parts and then they were asked some basic questions about what they have learnt. Then they were shown the process to dismantle the CPU and reassemble them by our Instructors of the day - Paras, Manish Srivatsav and Gaurav Mishra.

After the students were shown the process, they were grouped as teams of 2 by our instructors and given a target time of 4 minutes to assemble all the parts in a definite order and in a proper way. The top 3 teams were selected and given certificates for their work.

Highlights of success:

The students were very much interested because many of them knew how to fit in the basic components in the CPU but didn't actually know to remove and assemble all the parts completely and know their specific use. This made them enthusiastic to observe and the main goal of the event was thus achieved.

Feedback from the Attendees:

The feedback from the students was quite well, more than expected. As the students seemed highly interested in the workshop to learn the new stuff. They liked the challenge put in front of them to assemble the PC in a less time of 4 minutes, as it was quite different from the regular workshops that are conducted usually.

The final winners of the challenge round

Participants

Logistics/Planning:

Every part of the event was planned well before and the venue was the Student Activity Center in out University. There was ample space for the students to form a group and observe the assembly being explained by the instructors. The event started at 1:00 PM and continued till 3:45 PM. We were provided with 7 CPU's by our University Management out of which 3 were used for the challenge round by the students.

Key Learning:

The students get to know about the working and the importance of the components. We taught them the things which are usually not taught until a certain time from now. Knowing these things beforehand will help them to understand the topics much clearly when they are brought up in the curriculum of their course.

Follow-Up Actions:

After this particular event, we got to observe and find some enthusiastic minds who are good and fast enough to grasp new things in a very short time and implement them. They would be helpful to us in the forthcoming events whom we would like to teach much more new concepts and get ideas from them. Nevertheless, as the participants were quite excited about the time-based activity, we would like to hold more events in such manner in order to maintain their curiosity to participate in more technical event such as this one!

ZEST 2K15 was the urge to learn something new and be innovative. Keeping this thing in mind we the students of the Google Student Club and IEEE Computer Society organized a five-day event and workshop.
This is a short Video what is it all about :) :)
Day 1: UX-Design by Mr. Ajanthan Mani an Ex-Google employee and the current Director of the Design at Getting Clarity, Singapore. Information was given to student about the design techniques which should be used in nowadays software. Later students were given with a problem statement for which they have to develop a design for an app.
∙ Day 2: Cloud Computing by Mr. Varun (Cloud Developer) & Mr. Vishwesh (game developer) at Script, Chennai. Participants were given the basic idea about Cloud Computing, how they can create their own cloud, where Cloud Computing can be implemented. It was a very informative session.
Day 3: AdClasses & Digital Marketing by Mr. Prashant Kumar Pandey (GSA, Sathyabama). How online marketing can be incorporated in this digital era was explained to the participants. They were taught how to use AdWords in an efficient manner and how they can make use of AdSense in their own online space.
∙ Day 4: Design Sprint by Mr. Shekhar D. Pathak(Secretary at IEEE CS, Sathyabama & Event Manager at Google Student Club, Sathyabama). at day 4, a design sprint was conducted
to explain how we can develop an app rapidly. Participants were given two problem
statements (Online Marketing app & Travel Booking app) for which they have to develop an app and explain to the judges. Participants shelled out many new and innovative ideas on the problem they chose. But sadly we can choose only best 3 apps out of 17 proposed.
Day 5: Online Certification & Quiz by Mr. Navdeep Singh (Chairman at IEEE CS, Sathyabama) and Mr. Gaurav Mishra (Technical Head at IEEE CS, Sathyabama & GoogleStudent Club, Sathyabama). Day 5 was divided into two halves. In the first half, a Quiz on Google was conducted for all the participants divided into teams. In the first round of quiz, 5 teams were selected for the other two rounds. The other two rounds were played with the selected teams. At the end of round 3, top 3 teams with maximum marks were awarded. In the other half of the day, all participants gave the Google Basics exam (online certification).

What a great day it was to have a motivational speech by the Chairman of IEEE SIGHT Mr. Anand Balu.

The Faculty Head of our University Dr. M. Lakshmi also thanked Mr. Anand Balu for visiting our university and gave him a memento as a present.
Dr. M. Lakshmi announcing the winners of our previous event winners

Mr. Anand Balu giving the speech
There was a great crowd to hear from him. The venue for this event was our Library’s Auditorium which was flooded with the students of different years from different departments. If you ask me, there was no space left for me to sit in the hall.

As we all were being introduction about him, we got amazed about what all he has achieved in his life and the ways he chose to get them.

He started the session by talking about his experience and his passion towards learning. What and all are new in the market. He told us about his past experience with the many big institutions and how it works.
Later he also talked about personality development. He showed a path to fulfill our dreams.

We also had few fun sessions in between. He had really motivated the students and inspired them to start working from day 1 . He taught us not to think in a negative way because human brain do exactly the same which it’s taught not to do. So, instead of thinking that “It’s too hard, I can’t do it” think “It’s too easy and I've done it already”.

The talk ended with a Question-Answer session where several students asked questions to him about the implementation of an idea to a start-up and how it works. One of the question was “How can I get my start-up working?”. He gave fun full answers to all of the questions being asked to him yet all the answers were inspiring and motivating.

During this QA session, he told us about his story how he entered into getting started with his own start-up. It was a very tough time for him as well. But he cleared it and gave us all few tips for our future.

Finally i gave a vote of thanks to Mr. Anand Balu for such a great session

Finally a group pic with all the EXE-COMS

We all would like to thank Mr. Anand Balu for his visit to our university and having such a great talk with us. Hope to see you again soon.

Another successful event by Google Student Club – Sathyabama University. This event was based on the “Design Sprint” method developed by Google.

This time, the venue was our Digital Library, the same place where we conducted Bloggify. The pupil were from all the three years (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and different departments. There were 15 teams of 4 members each which were selected from a number of 78 teams registered for the event on a First Come First Serve basis.
We had a theme to create an app for PMO which was given as a challenge by our Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.

All the participants were given a small introduction about today’s task.

All of the participants were then taught about the importance of design in an application. The better is the design, the more users you will get. They were shown a comparison between the older way to create a product and the way Google do the same job. The actual meaning of “Design Sprint” was shown to them. The real-life scenario of rush to get a better product was created in front of them.

The rules of the Design Sprint was taught to the participant by our GSA Prashant Kumar Pandey. He showed them how Design Sprint is done, what are all the rules and gave them a challenge to create an android based app which can be used by the PMO officials as well as the citizen on India. All participants were then divided into a team of 4 and were given a time of 45 minutes to bring their idea into life.

The all teams were then set to create their own idea. First they were asked to create individual ideas by each member of their team, then combine their idea into one. As a result of these tasks we got these 15 Crazy 8s

All of the teams were then sent to have their lunch as they got exhausted after a 45 minutes of brainstorming. After the teams were back with full energy, they were ready to present their ideas.

Each team was given a time a 4 minutes to explain their app with their Crazy 8s. They have to present their idea in front of other teams and judges as well. It was a really tough time for the judges to judge all the teams.

As a team finish explaining their Crazy 8s, other participants were given time to ask them questions about their idea which was very interactive.

After the last team have finished their presentation, the judges gave the teams a set of 8 questions.

These questions again make them to scratch their brain.

After these brain tweaking questions, the judges announced the result and the top three teams were selected and were given the certificate of appreciation. One amazing thing happened in this event was the 1st place was occupied by the team of 1st year students, 2nd by 2nd year students and 3rd by 3rd year students.

Finally a crazy Group Pic with all the participants and judges to whom we are thankful to spend their valuable time in judging all the contestants.
